ERCIM News No.26 - July 1996 - CWI
Workshop on Parallel Numerical Algorithms and Applications
by Herman te Riele
The aim of this ERCIM Workshop on Parallel Numerical Algorithms and Applications, organized by Herman te Riele (CWI) and Markus Tresch (SGFI) in Zurich, Switzerland, 28 May 1996, was to present and discuss the state-of-the-art in the above field within ERCIM and at connected institutes, and to identify mutual interests within ERCIM.
Speakers came from the Institute of Scientific Computing of the ETH in Zuerich and the Swiss Center for Scientific Computing in Manno (both participating in the new ERCIM Member SGFI), CWI, and INRIA/IRISA.
Topic: Algorithms
Peter Arbenz, Institute of Scientific Computing, ETH Zuerich: A parallel solver for banded linear systems for the Intel Paragon
Bernard Philippe, INRIA/IRISA Rennes: Parallel computation of satellite trajectories
Miloud Sadkane, INRIA/IRISA Rennes Parallel computation of spectral portraits.
Topic: Implementations/Tools
Margreet Nool, CWI Amsterdam: Parallel implementational aspects of the Jacobi-Davidson algorithm for the generalized eigenvalue problem
Brian Wylie, CSCS/SCSC, Manno HPF and MPI Parallelization of Applications Supported by Integrated Program Engineering Tools
Vaibhav Deshpande, CSCS/SCSC, Manno Parallel Library Support for Structured and Unstructured Mesh Problems
Topic: Implementations/Applications
Wolfgang Joppich, GMD Bonn: Coupled Problems on Parallel Computers
Joke Blom, CWI Amsterdam: An evaluation of the Cray T3D pro-gramming paradigms in atmospheric chemistry/transport models
Matthias Schmidt, GMD FIRST Berlin: Parallelization of two Air Pollution Models of Eulerian and Lagrangian Type
Topic: Applications
Leonhard Jaschke, Institute of Scientific Computing, ETH Zuerich: Parallelisation of the Simulation of the ABB Melting Oven
Hans-Georg Galbas, GMD Bonn: A parallel multi-level proximity search algorithm
Herman te Riele, CWI Amsterdam: Parallel and numerical aspects of the new world record for factoring large numbers (
see also article in this issue
).
The discussion during and after the lectures showed that there is much mutual interest among the participating ERCIM institutes on the subjects of the workshop. Several promising contacts for future cooperation have been established. The success of the workshop has enhanced the decision of the Steering Committee of the
ERCIM Parallel Processing Network
(which met one day after the Workshop in Zurich) to submit a TMR proposal in Brussels at the first possible occasion.
