Seventh DELOS Workshop on Electronic Commerce

The seventh DELOS Workshop on Electronic Commerce was held as
part of the Second European Conference on Research and Advanced
Technology for Digital Libraries (ECDL’98) in Heraklion, Crete,
Greece, 21-23 September 1998 (see article in this issue).
With the rapidly evolving Internet technologies coupled with the
decreasing costs of computation and communication (network bandwidth),
a flexible environment for conducting commerce among businesses
has emerged. Focusing on the underlying issues to support
e-commerce and electronic markets of various kinds, the 7th Delos
Workshop brought together people with knowledge in the development
of digital libraries with others more interested by the electronic
commerce applications and the economics and the organizational
design of this emerging industry.
The Delos session has revealed questions about:
- the role of transaction processing and distributed computing in
the Internet age
- the ways electronic markets and intermediaries work in such a
distributed environment
- economics and business aspects related to the development of e-commerce
services (including intellectual property rights and impact on
employment).
Many pilot projects offering architectural and software solutions
to electronic-commerce problems have been also presented.
The papers are included in the ECDL’98 Conference Proceedings,
published in the Lecture Notes on Computer Science Series of Springer,
LNCS 1513, ISBN 3-540-65101-2.
The DELOS Working Group is an action of the ERCIM Digital Library
Initiative.
